Our story

A Taste of Tradition. Passed Down Through Generations

Craving for some good old-fashioned sambal chilli?

These days, it can be surprisingly difficult to find sambal chilli that tastes like the kind we grew up eating at home — rich, fragrant, spicy and made the traditional way.

Our sambal chilli started with very humble beginnings.

Many years ago, I remember my grandmother making a fresh batch of sambal chilli whenever our supply at home was running low. Later, my mum took over the tradition, keeping the family recipe alive in our kitchen.

And when I was old enough, I was roped into the family “production line”.

My job?

The mortar and pestle.

I was the chosen one to manually pound the chilli mixture, and those pounding sessions were truly a backbreaking experience! Looking back, though, I now appreciate just how much time, effort and patience went into making a good old-school sambal chilli.

According to my dad, who was born in the late 1930s, he remembers seeing my grandmother make this very same sambal chilli when he was a young boy.

That means this family recipe has been part of our family for many decades, passed from one generation to the next.

Why We Started

There are a few reasons why we decided to share our sambal chilli with others.

First, it is our way of honouring my late grandmother, who brought this special recipe into our family and started a tradition that has lasted for generations.

Second, sambal chilli has always been a favourite in our family. We grew up eating it, and it has been part of countless meals and memories over the years.

Third, whenever we hosted friends at home, our sambal chilli would almost inevitably become part of the conversation. Friends would compliment us on how good it tasted — and quite often, they would ask where they could get some!

But perhaps the biggest reason is simple:

We want more people to experience the taste of our family heirloom.

Our sambal chilli is made using carefully selected, quality ingredients. Most importantly, we want to preserve that authentic, old-school taste that reminds us of the sambal chilli we grew up with.

No shortcuts. Just a traditional family recipe, made with care.

More than Just Sambal Chilli

To us, this is more than just a bottle of chilli.

It is a piece of our family’s history.

It represents the recipes, flavours and memories that were passed down to us — and that we hope to pass on to the generations that come after us.

Our dream is for this humble family recipe to one day become a Singapore heritage brand, recognised not just for its sambal chilli, but for preserving and celebrating the traditional flavours that are part of our Singapore story.

We know that building a heritage brand takes time. For now, we are simply starting where it all began — in our family kitchen, with a recipe that has been loved for generations.

From Our Family to Yours

Every bottle carries a little piece of our family’s history — from my grandmother’s kitchen, to my mother’s hands, and eventually to mine.

We hope that when you taste our sambal chilli, you don’t just taste the heat.

We hope you taste the tradition, memories and love that have gone into every batch.

And perhaps, one day, when someone thinks of authentic Singapore sambal chilli, they will think of us.

From our family to yours.

Hae Bee Hiam

Enjoy it with rice, bread, pizza, pasta or simply as a flavourful accompaniment to your favourite dishes.

Vegetable Chilli

Stir-fry greens that taste of something

Heat a small amount of oil in a wok over low heat. Add the ready-made Vegetable Chilli Sauce and gently stir-fry until fragrant.

Add your choice of vegetables and prawns (optional) and stir-fry until evenly coated with the sauce.

Cooking times will vary depending on the type of vegetables used. Vegetables such as sweet potato leaves cook relatively quickly, while lady’s fingers (okra) and brinjal (eggplant) may require a longer cooking time.

For firmer vegetables such as lady’s fingers and brinjal, add sufficient water as required and continue cooking until the vegetables are tender and well coated with the sauce.

Dish out and serve immediately. Best enjoyed hot with steamed rice.

Chilli Crab Chilli

Singapore's chilli crab, at home

Heat a small amount of oil in a wok over low heat. Add the ready-made Chilli Crab sauce and gently stir-fry until fragrant.

Add the crabs and toss well, ensuring that each piece is evenly coated with the sauce. Pour in ½ cup of water and stir well.

Turn the heat to high and bring the sauce to a boil. Cover the wok with a lid, reduce to low heat and simmer for 5–6 minutes, adjusting the cooking time according to the size of the crabs.

Remove the lid and check that there is sufficient sauce remaining. Add 1–2 beaten eggs, followed by a slurry made with 2 tablespoons of corn flour and 2 tablespoons of water.

Stir gently for 10–15 seconds, allowing the egg and slurry to thicken the sauce and coat the crabs evenly.

Dish out, garnish with spring onions and parsley, and serve immediately.

Best enjoyed hot with steamed rice or mantou.
